This character was my first exposure to Autodesk Mudbox. ‘Digital Tutors’ did a video tutorial series on sculpting and texturing an alien character and I followed it through carefully from start to finish. After the first few videos I decided to buy a cheap entry-level graphics tablet to help control the sculpting pressure and brush size.
The whole sculpting and 3D painting process was an entirely new experience for me and I found it extremely satisfying and relaxing. I have never been able to draw particularly well so being able to sculpt something in this amount of detail freehand was incredibly cathartic. This spurred me on to attempt some other projects in my spare time, becoming my relaxation method of choice. I found the whole process so enjoyable that one of my first purchases once finding full-time employment was an entry-level Wacom tablet, a big improvement over my earlier hardware.
